01

The week in one line

A dry, calm week with no SAWS warnings for Cape Town: light south-easterlies and highs of 21–26 °C, warmest on Saturday. The news is on the forecourt, where November's increase now looks smaller and still lands on election day.

Nothing on the weather radar, so use the quiet week. Set your tyre pressures cold and make sure the aircon still blows cold before the warm weekend, allow for the roadworks still running around both branches, and if your tank is low, fill up by Tuesday 3 November.

These are quick checks at home or on the forecourt, not an inspection; a workshop check and your service schedule still apply.

10-year licence cards: still a draft

The draft that would make car and motorbike cards valid for ten years, published for comment in the Government Gazette on 17 August, is still a draft; truck and bus codes would stay at five years. Until it is final, keep renewing on the five-year cycle, so check the date on your card.

Driving licences may stop counting as ID

The department still plans to remove driving licences, learner’s licences and traffic register certificates from the list of accepted identification, with 30 days for comment once the draft is gazetted; it hasn't been yet. Nothing changes for now, but carry your ID or passport where you have to prove who you are.

Fuel & costs

November's increase keeps shrinking. Three weeks into the window it points to about R1.27 a litre on petrol 95, R1.38 on 93 and R1.24 on diesel 50ppm, down from about R2 on petrol a week ago. One more week of data is still to come, and the change lands on Wed 4 November, election day. If your tank is low, fill up by Tuesday the 3rd.

From Wed 4 Nov (expected)Per litre
Petrol 95+R1.27+127c
Petrol 93+R1.38+138c
Diesel 50ppm+R1.24+124c

Expected: Central Energy Fund daily data, average 2–22 October. The official adjustment is due before Wed 4 Nov; diesel is the wholesale change.

A warm week: is your aircon still blowing cold?

Highs of 24–26 °C from Tuesday are a good time to find out. At Montague Gardens the aircon check is free, and if it needs a regas it's R550, but only until this Saturday, 31 October. At Paarden Eiland, our free full vehicle inspection includes the aircon. Come in on Saturday morning: Montague Gardens 08:00–13:00, Paarden Eiland 08:00–12:00.

Why is my aircon blowing warm air?

Most often it’s low on gas from a slow leak. A leak check and regas usually gets it ice-cold again.
